Metroconsult is proud to announce that Roberto Dini has been inducted into the IP Hall of Fame, the most prestigious international recognition dedicated to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the development of intellectual property as a driver of innovation, economic growth, and technological progress.
Established in 2006, the IP Hall of Fame honors individuals who, throughout their careers, have made a significant contribution to advancing intellectual property as a strategic asset for businesses, research, and development. Previous inductees include inventors such as Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla, cultural figures such as Victor Hugo, and innovators such as Hedy Lamarr, whose pioneering work in wireless communications laid the foundations for technologies including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
The 2026 edition marks a particularly significant milestone for Italy: Mr. Dini is the first Italian ever to be admitted to this distinguished international community, a recognition that highlights the value of his contribution to the advancement of intellectual property on a global scale.

The award celebrates a unique entrepreneurial and professional journey that began in Turin more than 40 years ago. As the founder of Sisvel and Metroconsult, Dini was among the first to recognize the strategic value of patents not merely as tools for legal protection, but as genuine business assets capable of generating value for companies.
Through the creation of Sisvel, founded in 1982 and now recognized as a global leader in licensing and patent pools, Dini contributed to the development of licensing programs that have supported the worldwide adoption of key technologies, including mobile communications, Wi-Fi, audio and video compression, digital television, and, more recently, the Internet of Things. Over the years, these programs have generated billions of dollars in royalties for patent owners, enabling reinvestment in new research and creating a virtuous cycle linking innovation, business, and the marketplace.
The Central Role of Patents
Mr. Dini’s induction into the IP Hall of Fame also provides an opportunity to reaffirm a principle that has always guided Metroconsult’s work: every successful licensing program is built on a strong patent, carefully drafted and strategically developed.
An effective patent does not stem solely from a good idea. It requires meticulous drafting and strategic planning in order to:
- Clearly define the scope of protection for the invention, taking into account both the patent lifetime and potential future technological developments;
- Ensure robustness and enforceability in the event of infringement disputes and legal challenges;
- Support value creation through commercialization, licensing, or sale.
Mr. Dini himself emphasized in an article published by Corriere della Sera on June 15, it is essential for inventors to engage with an intellectual property expert. Only through this dialogue can the full innovative potential of an invention be properly identified and translated into a strong and commercially effective patent right.
Since its foundation, Metroconsult has shared and applied this vision by supporting companies and research organizations in building robust patent portfolios and creating the conditions needed to transform innovation into lasting and tangible value.
